Shipyards project puts building industry into overdrive
Collingwood's building market blasted into overdrive in February, courtesy of the Shipyards development.
The town issued a record-setting $21.57 million worth of building permits last month.
More than $17 million of that came from the Fram-Slokker development along the Collingwood waterfront.
The town collected $112,708.25 in building permit fees for the month, and a further $706,606 in development charges.
Simcoe County took another $234,480 in development charges.
By comparison, the previous record for February was $4.78 million in 2006.
In 2008, the town issued permits worth $2.5 million for February.
February's massive total brings the year-to-date construction activity to $23.5 million, which is the yearly equivalent that some municipalities comparable to Collingwood might see in a year.
Even without the Shipyards permits, the town was nearly in record position for the month at $4.25 million in building permits issued.
